Competent Communicators

This week's assignment for class EDUC 6165 has asked us to describe a person who demonstrates competent communication. I would have to say that a person in my life who demonstrates this is my mother-in-law. To me, she exhibits many qualities that make her an effective communicator. She holds a Masters in Education and is the Associate Dean of Enrollment Management for the community college near her home. Wherever she goes, she has a persona about her and the people that know her interact with her well. She is respected by many and has a listening ear. She also takes the time to make thoughtful responses when you are interacting with her. I feel I can go to her for advice because she is knowledgeable about many things. She has had years of experience in handling customers at the bank she managed, and now it transfers into her role as Associate Dean, providing students with help in enrollment. I think it is also important that she displays empathy and sensitivity to students' diverse needs in the enrollment process in a community college setting. Her commitment to helping others is shown in her frequent articles in the local newspaper to help encourage adults to begin their education at the community college.

I definitely want to pursue the success that my mother-in-law has achieved in her life. As Ghandi stated we need to "Be the change you wish to see in the world." I look up to her in my career and aspire to achieve what she has and be an important influence in the lives of others.

  1. Clara,
Communication is also listening. Sometimes we tend to talk and talk and question whether we are understood and we forget to listen and give others a chance to share their opinion or their thoughts.
I believe what makes your mother -in-law an effective and competent communicator is her ability to listen and empathize with other people.
Being able to see how she influenced the lives of others will definitely make you look up at her and follow her examples.
Good luck to you and thank you for your post.
    Thanks for your post.

It is wonderful that you have someone close to you with great communication skills. It should like she is a competent communicator and that helps her to do well in her job. I am very glad that you have a model to follow in your daily life.

It's always nice to have that person around that makes you want to strive for more. Good luck on reaching your goals.

  4. Clara,

Your mother in law posses a key trait in being a competent communicator and that's an ear to listen! In order to effectively communicate, we must know when and how to listen. Not only that, we must also know how to interpret what has been said. Thanks for sharing and I look forward to more of your blogs!
